Blackjack Software: How The Shuffle Works
Most online casino software shuffles cards using something called a pseudo-random number generator. "Pseudo-random? I thought it was really random?" You say. Not at all. When you think about it, a computer is completely incapable of producing truly random numbers. Modern computers are deterministic; that is to say they make decisions based on triggers, or on previous calculations. They can't make decisions out of thin air. In short, nothing a computer does can be truly random. An online blackjack pseudo-random number generator only simulates random number generation by using complicated mathematical algorithms. The sheer complexity of these algorithms makes the shuffle very hard to predict. That said, predicting the shuffle is not impossible.
Cracking The P-RNG
Every P-RNG begins with a seed: an initial number generated by a certain process. Some seeds are generated by a standalone algorithm. For instance, a seed could be generated from a starting point using a dynamic Fibonacci sequence. Most online casino seeds however, are much more predictable. Many of them simply synchronize with the casino server's system clock. This means that if a programmer can figure out the casino server's system clock timing, he can determine the casino's P-RNG seed. From there, simply plugging the seed into the shuffle algorithm will produce numbers representing the exact order of the shuffle. This allows the programmer to accurately predict what cards are next in the deck. Note that not every online casino seeds from the system clock. The point of the above is simply this: once a casino program's seed is known, and the shuffle algorithm is known, it is possible to predict future cards dealt in a
